Experience and lessons learned from the research and development of CY14-1B hydraulic piston pumps in China.

CY14-1B pumps are high-pressure axial piston pumps independently designed and manufactured by China in the late 1960s. They have been supporting industrial machinery industries such as forging and metallurgy from the 1970s to the late 1990s. The successful independent development of CY pump has put an end to the optional situation of no plunger pump in China's forging machinery, and also laid the foundation for the design and manufacturing of domestic hydraulic plunger pumps. In today's environment of advocating technological innovation and revitalizing the equipment manufacturing industry, the hydraulic industry is in a rare period of development. How can hydraulic enterprises develop products that lead the market? With this question in mind, our reporter visited Xu Shengwu, a leader in the design and development of CY pumps in China, a recipient of special allowances from the State Council, and a professor level senior engineer of plunger pumps.

What was the background and process of CY14-1B Axial Piston Pump development at that time?

Forging machinery without pump available

In the 1950s and 1960s, China's forging machinery faced a situation where there was no pump available and no pump optional. At that time, Soviet radial piston pumps and crankshaft pumps were introduced, which had low pressure, small displacement, large volume and weight, and could not meet the requirements of forging machinery. Therefore, in 1961, Jinan Institute of Casting and Forging Machinery established a project - the study of high-speed and high-pressure pumps, with Min Xuexiong, the chief engineer of the Fourth Research Laboratory at that time (later appointed as the chief engineer of the Institute), as the project leader. I graduated from Xi'an Jiaotong University with a major in forging in 1961 and was assigned to the Casting and Forging Institute. The graduation project topic was "hydraulic system of Quick Forging Hydraulic Press", which involved pumps, valves, and systems. Therefore, in 1963, Mr. Min transferred me to this high-speed high-pressure pump research group and appointed me as the project leader. With the help of our colleagues in the research group, we have established a policy of first introducing a portion of prototypes for testing, analysis, surveying, digestion, and finally creating our own products. At that time, 13 prototypes from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan were introduced and tested on a test bench at Jinan Casting and Forging Institute for more than two years. These pumps were tested, disassembled, and analyzed, and finally it was determined to develop China's own axial piston pump based on the axial piston pump of American DENISON Hydraulics. The main reason for choosing it is that its pressure can reach 35MPa, and the forging industry requires a 32MPa plunger pump.

Joint design and development of CY14-1B pump

In February 1966, our institute sent personnel to Tianjin High Pressure Pump and Valve Factory to jointly design a 32MPa axial pump, including four units: Jinan Casting and Forging Institute, Tianjin High Pressure Pump and Valve Factory, Tianjin Machine Tool Research Institute, and Hunan Changsha Machine Tool Factory. We jointly developed the CY14-1 axial piston pump and confirmed that I was responsible for it. The joint design team referred to the prototype, but did not conduct any surveying and mapping because these prototypes did not meet the parameter requirements of our country and the standards did not match. Our country has metric standards, and most of these prototypes are British standards. If surveying and mapping is carried out, there will be difficulties in future production, cutting tools, and other aspects, and these prototypes also have certain defects. Therefore, we determined in Tianjin at that time.
